I'M HERE TONIGHT TO ASK THE BOARD TO ADOPT MOTION NUMBER ONE AND APPROVE THE SALE OF THE FORMER CLIFTON PARK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PROPERTY TO NEW CREATION LEARNING CENTER. I WANT TO TELL YOU WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE WILL BRING TO THIS COMMUNITY. NEW CREATION LEARNING CENTER EXISTS TO PROVIDE FAMILIES WITH A QUALITY CHRISTIAN EDUCATION OPTION. KILLEEN IS A COMMUNITY RICH IN FAITH, AND MANY FAMILIES HERE ARE ACTIVELY SEARCHING FOR A SCHOOL THAT REFLECTS THEIR VALUES. WE WILL GIVE THEM THAT CHOICE. A NURTURING, FAITH BASED ENVIRONMENT WHERE STUDENTS ARE EDUCATED ACADEMICALLY AND SHAPED IN CHARACTER. WE ARE. WE ARE ALSO DEEPLY COMMITTED TO SERVING OUR MILITARY FAMILIES. YOU KNOW, HAVING TO WHEN YOU FACE CONSTANT TRANSITIONS, DEPLOYMENTS AND DISRUPTIONS, YOU KNOW, THAT SOMETIMES MAKE TRADITIONAL SCHOOLING A LITTLE HARD FOR THEM. WELL, NEW CREATION WILL OFFER A DEDICATED HOMESCHOOL SUPPORT RESOURCES, CURRICULUM GUIDANCE, CO-OP LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES, AND A STABLE EDUCATIONAL HOME FOR CHILDREN WHOSE LIVES ARE ANYTHING BUT STABLE. THESE FAMILIES SACRIFICE EVERYTHING FOR THIS COUNTRY. THEY DESERVE A SCHOOL THAT MEETS THEM WHERE THEY ARE.

THE FORMER CLIFTON PARK BUILDING HAS ALWAYS BEEN A PLACE WHERE CHILDREN CAME TO LEARN. WE INTEND TO HONOR THAT LEGACY UNDER NEW CREATION LEARNING CENTER. THAT BUILDING WILL ONCE AGAIN BE FILLED WITH YOUNG PEOPLE GROWING, DISCOVERING AND REACHING THEIR POTENTIAL, ROOTED IN FAITH AND EQUIPPED FOR LIFE. I BELIEVE THAT WE ARE NOT COMPETITION. I BELIEVE THAT IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD. THIS COMMUNITY DESERVES THAT OPTION.

THESE FAMILIES DESERVE THAT SUPPORT, AND THIS BUILDING DESERVES TO BE ALIVE AGAIN.

MY NAME IS DON RICHARDSON, RETIRED EDUCATOR AND CONCERNED CITIZEN. I AM HERE TO ADDRESS THE IMMINENT CLOSING OF MESNA AS PART OF KISD AND IT BECOMING A CHARTER. YOU ARE CAUGHT BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE TO STAY OPEN UNDER KISD. YOU RUN THE RISK THAT IF SCORES DON'T IMPROVE, THE STATE TAKES OVER THE ENTIRE DISTRICT TO MOVE IT TO A CHARTER GIVES THE DISTRICT A FEW YEARS OF BREATHING ROOM, BUT. HOWEVER, NO GUARANTEES THAT OUR STUDENTS ARE GOING TO FARE ANY BETTER GIVEN THAT THEY DON'T HAVE TO FOLLOW THE SAME RULES AND GUIDELINES THAT WE DO. YET, THE REASON THAT WE ARE IN THIS SITUATION IN THE FIRST PLACE IS NOT ENOUGH TEACHERS OR ASSISTANTS HAVING TO

CONSOLIDATE SCHOOLS, AND NOT HAVING THE FLEXIBILITY TO SLOW DOWN AND TEACH, BECAUSE THE T RULES AND CURRICULUM, COUPLED WITH THE FACT OF INADEQUATE FUNDING. AND NOW THAT THE VOUCHERS HAVE BEEN IMPROVED, THE LOSS OF STUDENTS WILL ONLY EXACERBATE THAT FUNDING PROBLEM.

HOWEVER, THERE ARE WAYS THAT MIGHT HELP. INSTEAD OF DOUBLE MATH OR READING CLASSES, TRY DOING A SMALL GROUP APPROACH. WHEN I TAUGHT AT ELLISON, MR. RAINWATER WAS FACED WITH AN EXTREMELY LARGE NUMBER OF SENIORS NOT GOING TO GRADUATE DUE TO NOT PASSING THE MATH TEST. HE CALLED IN A GROUP OF 30 OF US AND ASKED US TO TUTOR JUST FIVE WHENEVER WE COULD.

DIDN'T HAVE A LOT OF MONEY TO PAY US, BUT MOST OF US AGREE. I TUTORED MOSTLY ON WEEKENDS BECAUSE MY FIVE WORKED OUT OF THE FIVE THAT I RECEIVED FOR PASSED, AND THE ONE WHO DIDN'T COME UNFORTUNATELY DIDN'T. I AM MORE THAN SURE THAT THE RETIREES AND FOLKS IN THIS DISTRICT WOULD DO SOMETHING JUST LIKE THIS. ALSO, INSTEAD OF TUTORING WITH THE SAME LESSONS AND MATERIALS, DO SATURDAY MORNING CAMPS WITH HANDS ON LESSONS THAT INCORPORATES ALL OF THE DISCIPLINES, I HANDED YOU SAMPLES OF WHAT I USED. THIS YEAR, 35 STUDENTS ACROSS OUR DISTRICT EARNED THE PRESTIGIOUS TEXAS THEATER SCHOLAR DISTINCTION, AWARDED BY TEXAS THESPIANS TO STUDENTS WHO DEMONSTRATE EXCEPTIONAL ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT WHILE ACTIVELY PARTICIPATING IN THEIR SCHOOL'S THEATER PROGRAM. EARNING THIS RECOGNITION REQUIRES A COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE BOTH IN THE CLASSROOM AND ON THE STAGE. THESE STUDENTS BALANCE THE RIGOROUS DEMANDS OF THEATER PRODUCTION WITH STRONG ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE, PROVING CREATIVITY AND SCHOLARSHIP CAN SHINE TOGETHER. BECAUSE THAT'S REALLY WHY WE'RE HERE AND WHAT WE DO. AND SO YOU GUYS, I KNOW SOMETIMES YOU HAVE, I ALWAYS SAY BOTH ENDS OF THE BULL, BUT I THINK YOU JUST LET YOU KNOW WE APPRECIATE IT. I REALLY. I GET THE, THE IMPRESSION SOMETIMES THAT THE STATES JUST TRY TO MAKE IT MORE COMPLICATED. THEY'RE PASSING LAWS AND THEY DON'T REALLY KNOW WHAT THEY MEAN. AND WE'RE JUST TRYING TO FIND OUT WHAT ALL THIS WORKS AND HOW THIS HELPS OUR KIDS. SO IT'S DIFFICULT TIMES. I THINK WE ALL KNOW THAT AND I THINK WE ALL APPRECIATE THAT. SO I DON'T KNOW HOW TO GET ALL THE INFORMATION IN THE CLASSROOM TEACHER OR TO A BUS DRIVER OR CAFETERIA WORKER OR JANITOR. BUT I JUST, JUST SOMEHOW WE GOT TO LET THOSE PEOPLE KNOW THEY'RE APPRECIATED. AND NOT, NOT BECAUSE SIMPLY THEY'RE GREAT PEOPLE, BUT BECAUSE THEY'RE TAKING CARE OF OUR KIDS. THANKS. THANK YOU.
