THE FIRST CATEGORY WAS FOR STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS, AND THEN THE SECOND CATEGORY WAS FOR ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS AND EDUCATIONAL EXCURSIONS. SO THE INTEREST FROM THE DONATION WAS ALLOCATED TO IMPLEMENT ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS TAILORED TO THE SPECIFIC NEEDS OF SELECT ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY STUDENTS. THESE PROGRAMS OFFERED ADDITIONAL ACADEMIC SUPPORT, MENTORSHIP, AND RESOURCES TO HELP STUDENTS SUCCEED ACADEMICALLY AND SOCIALLY. SO THE FIRST LAYER OF SUPPORT WAS THE YES PROGRAM.
YES STANDS FOR YOUNG ENGAGED SCHOLARS, AND IT SUPPORTED THIRD GRADERS AND SEVENTH GRADERS WHO SCORED BETWEEN THE 31ST AND 49TH PERCENTILE ON THEIR MATH ASSESSMENT. AND FOR THOSE SEVENTH GRADERS WHO DID NOT PASS READING STAR WHEN THEY WERE IN SIXTH GRADE, THERE WAS AN APPLICATION PROCESS, AND WE PLANNED FOR COHORTS OF 30 FOR OUR THIRD GRADE STUDENTS AND FOR OUR SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS AS WELL. OUR THEME REALLY FOCUSED ON INTEGRATION, INTEGRATION, INTEGRATION. I KNOW WHEN I CAME AND TALKED TO YOU ABOUT THE PROPOSAL, WE MENTIONED THAT WE KNEW WE COULD NOT HAVE STUDENTS WHO WERE STRUGGLING WITH READING, ATTEND A PROGRAM ON SATURDAY AND READ ALL DAY THAT THEY WERE IN THE PROGRAM. SO WE COMBINED READING WITH STEM, SO SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH. AND THEN WE ALSO ADDED THE ARTS. SO STUDENTS HAD AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE ARTS PORTION TO SELECT THEIR FIRST, SECOND AND THIRD CHOICE ABOUT WHICH ART THEY WANTED TO PARTICIPATE IN. THEY COULD BECOME A MEMBER OF THE ORCHESTRA. THEY COULD DO VISUAL ART, OR THEY COULD DO THEATER ART AS WELL. IN ADDITION TO LEARNING ABOUT READING, THE LESSONS WERE VARIED AND REALLY FOCUSED ON PROJECT BASED LEARNING. WE USED ACHIEVE 3000, WHICH IS AN ONLINE SUPPLEMENTAL LITERACY PROGRAM THAT FOCUSED ON NONFICTION TEXT. WE ALSO USED DRONES. THEY HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN VIDEO GAME DESIGN IN ADDITION TO ROBOTICS. AND WE INCLUDED HERE ON THE SCHEDULE SO THAT YOU WOULD KNOW IT WAS A FULL DAY OF LEARNING FOR OUR STUDENTS. THE STEM PORTION WITH THE READING INTEGRATION WAS IN THE MORNING FROM 8 TO 12. THEY RECEIVED LUNCH AND THEN IN THE AFTERNOON THEY HAD THE FINE ARTS STRAND. ACCORDING TO THE OPTION THAT THEY SELECTED WAS MOST IMPORTANT TO THEM. OUR STAFF CONSISTED OF KISD TEACHERS WHO APPLIED TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS PROGRAM. SO WE HAD TWO THIRD GRADE TEACHERS FOR READING, ONE SEVENTH GRADE, WE HAD TWO THIRD GRADE STEM TEACHERS AND ONE SEVENTH GRADE.

WITH VISUAL ARTS. WE HAD CREATIVE ART, CREATIVE ACTION, WHICH IS AN AUSTIN BASED PROGRAM THAT WORKED ON THE THEATER ARTS. AND THEN WE HAD NEW HORIZONS, WHICH IS A CHOLINE BASED PROGRAM THAT REALLY WORKED WITH OUR STUDENTS RELATED TO ORCHESTRA. SO WE WANTED TO GIVE YOU SOME INFORMATION ABOUT OUR ATTENDANCE. WE STARTED LATE OCTOBER, STARTED PRETTY STRONG. WE PLANNED FOR THE COHORTS OF 30. SO YOU CAN SEE HOW MANY STUDENTS IN THIRD GRADE AND HOW MANY STUDENTS IN SEVENTH GRADE ACTUALLY PARTICIPATED FOR EACH OF OUR SESSIONS. BUT THEN WE WANTED TO ACTUALLY SHARE THAT WE HAD ABOUT 70% OF OUR THIRD GRADERS WHO ATTENDED AT LEAST 50% OF OUR SESSIONS, BUT THAT PERCENTAGE WAS SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER FOR OUR SEVENTH GRADERS. SO ABOUT 40% OF OUR SEVENTH GRADERS WHO APPLIED AND HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED INTO THE PROGRAM ATTENDED 50% OR MORE OF OUR SESSIONS. SO WE WANTED TO BE ABLE TO SEE HOW MUCH GROWTH OUR STUDENTS MADE FROM THE MAP TEST THAT THEY TOOK AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR TO THE SPRING. AND THESE ARE THEIR PERCENTAGES FOR GROWTH. 17.4 STUDENTS MADE SCORED IN THE LOW CATEGORY FOR GROWTH FROM FALL TO SPRING 13 AND LOW AVERAGE 26 AND AVERAGE 17.4, AND HIGH AVERAGE AND 26.1 IN HIGH FOR OUR THIRD GRADERS. AND THEN THESE ARE THE PERCENTAGES FOR OUR SEVENTH GRADERS, 23.1 AND LOW 7.7. IN LOW AVERAGE, 46.2 IN THE HIGH AVERAGE CATEGORY, AND THEN 23.1 IN THE HIGH CATEGORY. SO WE ALSO COMPARED THEIR RESULTS ON STAR TO SEE HOW SUCCESSFUL THEY HAD BEEN. 21% OF OUR STUDENTS DID NOT MEET THE GRADE LEVEL STANDARD ON STAR 41, OR ALMOST 42% OF OUR STUDENTS SCORED IN THE APPROACHES CATEGORY, AND 38 POINTS. 38% OF OUR THIRD GRADERS WHO PARTICIPATED PARTICIPATED IN YES SCORED IN MEETS GRADE LEVEL. OUR SEVENTH GRADE STAR RESULTS WERE A LITTLE DIFFERENT. 50% OF THE STUDENTS WHO PARTICIPATED DID NOT MEET THE GRADE LEVEL STANDARD. 31% OF THEM WERE APPROACHES AND 19% OF THEM SCORED IN THE MEETS CATEGORY. SO WE WANTED TO CHANGE OUR TARGET AUDIENCE JUST A LITTLE BIT FOR THIS YEAR. WE WANTED TO CONTINUE THE FOR THE THIRD GRADERS WHO PARTICIPATED LAST YEAR IN FOURTH GRADE. THIS YEAR WE WANTED TO ADD THIRD GRADERS THIS YEAR, AND SINCE WE HAD DECLINING PARTICIPATION AND ENGAGEMENT WITH OUR SEVENTH GRADERS, WE WANTED TO CHANGE THE TARGET AUDIENCE TO OUR SIXTH GRADERS BECAUSE WE HOPE THAT THEIR FIRST YEAR IN MIDDLE SCHOOL WOULD ALLOW MORE OF THOSE STUDENTS TO WANT TO ENGAGE AND PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM. OF COURSE, STUDENTS AT ALL OF OUR CAMPUSES WOULD BE ABLE TO APPLY, BUT WE WANTED TO BE SURE WE PROVIDED SOME ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE TO OUR D AND F CAMPUSES SO THAT WE WOULD HOPE MORE STUDENTS FROM THOSE CAMPUSES WOULD APPLY TO PARTICIPATE. SO THAT WAS THE FIRST PORTION OF THE PHILANTHROPIC FUNDS. AND BEFORE WE MOVE TO THE SECOND PORTION OF THE PHILANTHROPIC FUNDS, WE CAN PAUSE TO SEE IF THERE ARE ANY QUESTIONS AT THIS TIME. WE KNOW THAT THE NATIONAL MERIT PREPARATION FUNDS MAY BE USED TO SEND OUR STUDENTS WITH THE TOP PSAT SCORES TO NATIONAL MERIT CAMP AND OUR HOST NATIONAL MERIT AND AP CAMPS WITHIN OUR DISTRICT. INCREASING EQUITY IN OUR ADVANCED ACADEMICS AND THEN ELEVATING THEIR COMPETITIVENESS FOR NATIONAL MERIT RECOGNITION. BUT WE ALSO HAVE STUDENTS WHO HAVE ACADEMIC POTENTIAL WHO DON'T HAVE THAT FOUNDATION AT HOME. BY HAVING THIS PROGRAM AT THIS SIDE OF THE SPECTRUM, AS DOCTOR CREIGHTON WAS SAYING, WE PROVIDE EQUITY FOR THOSE STUDENTS BECAUSE WE'RE NOT WAITING FOR THEM TO COME TO US.
WE ARE GOING TO FIND THEM BECAUSE THEY ARE THERE. THAT'S WHAT THIS PROGRAM IS ALL ABOUT.
THE PSAT NMSQT IS THE TEST THAT IDENTIFIES THOSE WHO ARE NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARS ARE GOING TO BE, BUT WE CANNOT WAIT UNTIL THAT TEST TO PREPARE THEM TO BE THE SCHOLAR. THAT PREPARATION NEEDS TO START WAY BACK IN THE EIGHTH AND NINTH GRADE. SO THIS YEAR, FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MANY YEARS, WE ARE GOING TO BE ADMINISTERING THE PSAT EIGHT NINE. AND THEN IN THE SPRING, WE'RE GOING TO ADMINISTER THE PSAT TEN TO A SELECT GROUP OF STUDENTS. THOSE STUDENTS WERE IDENTIFIED EITHER BECAUSE THEY WERE TOP ACADEMIC STUDENTS BASED ON WHAT THEY'VE SCORED ON STAR OR ACADEMICALLY ON THEIR MATH SCORES, OR BECAUSE THEY ARE AVID STUDENTS.
THESE STUDENTS ARE GOING TO CHALLENGE THE PSAT EIGHT NINE. AND THEN IN THE SPRING, THE 10TH GRADERS ARE GOING TO CHALLENGE THE PSAT TEN. IN ADDITION TO THIS AUDIENCE, WE ALSO HAVE THE PSAT NMSQT, AND WE HAVE ENCOURAGED MANY MORE STUDENTS TO SIGN UP FOR THAT EXAM THIS YEAR THAN WE HAD LAST YEAR, BECAUSE WE ARE NOW PROMOTING THAT EXAM AS A GATEWAY AND AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THEM. SO, FOR EXAMPLE, LAST YEAR WE HAD APPROXIMATELY 300 700 STUDENTS SIGN UP THIS YEAR. LAST WEEK, I SENT OUT A CALL OUT TO OVER 2000 STUDENTS. THIS YEAR WE HAVE ONE NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLAR BECAUSE LAST YEAR WE DIDN'T HAVE AS MANY STUDENTS CHALLENGING THE PSAT NMSQT. SO WE HAVE ONE NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALIST. THE IDEA IS THAT BY PROVIDING THIS SUPPORT FROM THE TIME THEY START IN THE EIGHTH GRADE, WE ARE GOING TO BE PREPARING OUR STUDENTS TO ENTER INTO THAT COMPETITION BECAUSE THEY'LL BE READY AND IT WON'T EVEN BE A QUESTION. IT WILL BE, OF COURSE, I'M GOING TO TAKE THE PSAT NMSQT. ANOTHER BENEFIT OF TAKING THE PSAT EARLY IS THAT THE COLLEGE BOARD ALREADY PROVIDES A REPORT CALLED AP POTENTIAL, AND I'M NOT SURE IF YOU'RE FAMILIAR WITH THIS REPORT, BUT IT IS A GOLD MINE. SO WHAT THIS REPORT DOES IS BASED ON THE SCORES THAT THE STUDENTS ACHIEVE IN THE PSAT EIGHT NINE OR THE PSAT, IS THAT IT WILL TELL US WHICH STUDENTS HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO SUCCEED IN ANY NUMBER OF AP COURSES. RIGHT NOW, WE DON'T HAVE THAT DATA BECAUSE THE STUDENTS DIDN'T TAKE THE TEST. SO WHEN WE GO IN TO RUN THE AP POTENTIAL, WE'RE GETTING DATA FOR OUR CURRENT SENIORS. THEY HAVE ALREADY SPENT THEIR HIGH SCHOOL YEARS SIGNING UP FOR AP COURSES. OUR STUDENTS ARE TAKING THE PSAT EIGHT NINE. AS SOON AS WE GET THOSE SCORES BACK, WE'RE GOING TO BE ABLE TO PULL THAT REPORT AND LOOK BY STUDENT. AND IT WILL SAY BASED ON WHAT THEY SCORED ON THE PSAT EIGHT NINE, THIS STUDENT SHOWS POTENTIAL FOR DOING WELL IN AP CALCULUS. THIS STUDENT SHOWS POTENTIAL FOR DOING WELL IN AP ENGLISH. AND THEN WE CAN PROACTIVELY GO TO THOSE STUDENTS, SOME OF WHOM MAY ALREADY HAVE IN THEIR MIND.

WE HAVE NOTICED A SIGNIFICANT SHIFT. YOU'LL SEE THAT FRENCH HAS KIND OF APPROACHED OUR TOP FIVE, WHERE PREVIOUSLY THEY WERE NOT EVEN OUR TOP TEN. SO THAT'S BEEN A HUGE INFLUX OF A LANGUAGE BEING SERVED IN OUR DISTRICT. AND SO WE'RE KIND OF KEEPING AN EYE ON THAT AS WE LOOK AT HOW TO SERVE THESE STUDENTS ACROSS OUR DISTRICT. WHEN WE TALK ABOUT THE PROGRAMS WE OFFER, WE FALL REALLY UNDER TWO UMBRELLAS. SO THE FIRST UMBRELLA IS OUR BILINGUAL PROGRAM. AND IN OUR DISTRICT, WE'RE CURRENTLY SERVING TWO TYPES OF BILINGUAL PROGRAMS. THE FIRST ONE YOU'LL SEE HERE IS OUR DUAL LANGUAGE ONE WAY. WE'RE CURRENTLY IMPLEMENTING THAT IN PRE-K THROUGH SECOND. SO THAT'S THE PROGRAM WE'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT THAT WE'RE PHASING IN. AND THE GOAL OF THAT PROGRAM IS FOR OUR STUDENTS IN THAT PROGRAM TO ATTAIN BILINGUALISM AND BY LITERACY. DID THEY PASS THE STAR TEST? LIKE DID THEY DO OKAY WITHOUT HAVING THE ADDITIONAL SUPPORTS? BECAUSE ONCE THEY GOT RECLASSIFIED, THEY BECAME MONITORING? IS THAT CORRECT? YES. THEY ARE LOOKING FOR A MINIMUM OF 90. AND WE AS A DISTRICT WE HAVE HAVE 124. SO BASICALLY FOUR MONTHS OF CASH ON HAND TO OPERATE THE NEXT SET OF QUESTIONS. THEY COME FROM EAST AND WEST, NORTH AND SOUTH, AND THEY WILL GO BACK OUT NORTH AND WEST, NORTH AND SOUTH, EAST AND WEST. THEY DON'T OFTEN STAY HERE IN OUR COMMUNITY, SO WE ARE REALLY EDUCATING AMERICAN STUDENTS, AND WE MUST DO IT IN A BIPARTISAN MANNER. AND WE NEED BIPARTISAN SUPPORT ON FUNDING PUBLIC EDUCATION AND STAFFING OR FUNNELING THE MONEY BACK INTO OUR IMPACTED DISTRICTS SO THAT WE CAN EDUCATE AMERICA'S CHILDREN. AND SO I JUST THINK IT'S REALLY CRUCIAL. AND EVERYBODY WHO WILL LISTEN TO ME, I GET ON MY MY SOAPBOX. I TRY TO GET A TALLER SOAPBOX EACH YEAR. AND WE CAN'T TAKE TOO MUCH TO THE CONGRESSIONAL OFFICES BECAUSE YOU CAN'T GIVE THEM ANYTHING MORE THAN A $10 SOMETHING OR ANOTHER. SO THIS YEAR, IN THE GIFT STORE AT THE HOTEL, I WAS ABLE TO FIND FIVE WONDERFUL LITTLE STORYBOOKS THAT SAID A EDUCATING AMERICA'S CHILDREN MORE OR LESS. AND I BOUGHT EVERY ONE UP SO NONE OF THE OTHER SCHOOL DISTRICTS COULD GET ANY OF THEM BEFORE I COULD. AND AND WE TOOK THEM TO THE CONGRESSIONAL OFFICES. AND BUT THAT IS REALLY WHAT I WANT EVERYBODY TO UNDERSTAND. WE ARE EDUCATING AMERICA'S CHILDREN. SO TO THE STAFF, TO THE TEACHERS, TO EVERYBODY WHO IS OUT THERE WORKING WITH OUR STUDENTS, PLEASE KNOW THAT YOUR IMPACT IS NATIONAL. IT'S NOT JUST HERE IN THE KILLEEN FOOTPRINT. GOING AND BE ABLE TO SAY, KILLEEN ISD WAS THE BEST SCHOOL DISTRICT I WENT TO. IT WAS WHERE WE HAD THE DEDICATED TEACHERS, WE HAD THE DEDICATED STAFF, WE HAD THE DEDICATED BOARD THAT LOVED EDUCATION AND PUT THEIR FOOT FORWARD TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR DISTRICT WAS FUNDED IN SUCH A MANNER. SO I, LIKE I SAID, I GO, I GET ON MY SOAPBOX, ANYBODY WHO WILL LISTEN AND I WOULD ENCOURAGE ANY BOARD MEMBER TO GO WITH US TO THE HILL. SOMETIMES YOU THINK IT'S NOT BENEFICIAL, BUT THE STAFFERS ARE THE ONES WHO DO THE WORK, JUST LIKE THE STAFFERS HERE AND THE TEACHERS HERE ARE THE ONES THAT DO THE WORK, NOT US SITTING HERE ON THE DAIS. SO GETTING IN FRONT OF THOSE STAFFERS AND TALKING TO THOSE STAFFERS IS IMPORTANT.AND SO, YES, I WOULD ENCOURAGE ANY OF YOU GUYS TO GO WITH US WHEN WE GO IN MARCH BECAUSE THERE'LL BE ANOTHER CONFERENCE THEN.
